How does EPF work in Sabah?

EPF in Sabah at a glance
The Employees Provident Fund (EPF), run by KWSP (Kumpulan Wang Simpanan Pekerja), is Malaysia's national retirement savings scheme. Workers and employers in Sabah contribute monthly, building a fund the member can draw on at retirement and for certain approved needs.
The Sabah office is Wisma KWSP, Jalan Kemajuan, Kota Kinabalu, on 088-221 223. Most members rarely visit, because contributions, statements and many withdrawals are handled online through i-Akaun.
Setting up i-Akaun lets you check your balance, track contributions and apply for withdrawals from your phone — far quicker than visiting the counter.
Registration and contributions
Every employee should have an EPF account. Employers register new staff and deduct monthly contributions, adding the employer's share on top. The combined amount is credited to the member's account, where it earns an annual dividend declared by KWSP.
Self-employed people and those without an employer can contribute voluntarily through schemes such as i-Saraan. KWSP also enforces compliance, taking action against employers who fail to remit contributions on time.
Managing your account with i-Akaun
i-Akaun is the EPF's online and mobile service, and it is the easiest way to manage your savings. Through it you can check your balance, view your contribution history, update details and apply for eligible withdrawals without going to an office.
First-time users register with their MyKad and EPF number. Once verified, the app and website give a clear picture of your retirement savings and any withdrawals you qualify for.
Withdrawals and when you can make them
EPF savings are mainly for retirement, so most can be withdrawn in full at age 55 or 60. Before then, EPF allows specific partial withdrawals for approved purposes such as buying or building a home, funding education, and certain medical treatments.
Each withdrawal type has its own eligibility rules and supporting documents. Applications can usually be started in i-Akaun, with the counter available for cases that need in-person verification.
EPF rules, account structures and withdrawal conditions change over time. This page is general information, not financial advice. Confirm current rules on kwsp.gov.my or with KWSP directly.
What to bring
For counter services, bring your MyKad and your EPF number, plus the original and a copy of any supporting documents — for example a sale and purchase agreement for a housing withdrawal, or enrolment proof for education.
If you can, start the application in i-Akaun first; the counter visit then becomes a quick verification step rather than a full submission. The UTC KK counter offers longer hours for working members.
