Yayasan Sabah (Menara Tun Mustapha) – Providing Sweeping Views of Sabah’s Capital

by Daniel Wong

When going on a vacation somewhere new, you usually build your itinerary around going to the most popular attractions, such as historical sites, museums, parks and beaches, as well as enjoying some outdoor activities if you’re looking for a thrilling edge to your trip.

In the middle of all your adventures, though, sometimes, it is good to just stop and take some time to soak in and appreciate the views around you, which is exactly what Menara Tun Mustapha allows you to do when you’re in Sabah.

Sabah Foundation Building, The Yayasan Sabah

The Menara Tun Mustapha, which takes its name from former Chief Minister Tun Datu Mustapha, is also known as the Sabah Foundation Building or Yayasan Sabah, and is located just outside the city limits of Kota Kinabalu.

Towering at 30 storeys and 122 metres high, it is one of the tallest buildings on the whole island of Borneo and is also a splendid feat of modern architecture.

The architecture structure

Indeed, the building has a circular structure, making it stand out like a beacon against the horizon, with steel bars supporting each floor. At the time it was finished in 1977, it was one of just a handful of buildings to have such a revolutionary design.

Even now, though it still looks very impressive, standing out against its surroundings not just for its mere height but also its looks.

Facilities for Yayasan Sabah

The building houses several offices, along with an auditorium, a gymnasium, a research library, a kindergarten school, two mini-theatres, and most notably, a revolving restaurant on the 18th floor called the @mosphere, which is where tourists can enjoy spectacular views of Kota Kinabalu, including the city center, the surrounding beaches that lead to the blue ocean, the mountains around it, some of the old villages on the city fringes, and the river that runs through it.

The restaurant serves excellent food, as well, including sumptuous steak and seafood dishes, so you can have something to enjoy apart from the views. Various cocktail drinks are offered, as well.

Getting to Menara Tun Mustapha

There are two ways to get to Menara Tun Mustapha from the city center of Kota Kinabalu. One is by bus, which you can take at the terminal just beside Wawasan Plaza and the other is by taxi.

Photography Tips

You can also take excellent photo of Yayasan Sabah building from Tanjung Lipat, a highway that leads to that building.
