When going to Sabah and you’re the adventurous type, you should definitely try Sabah diving. This is one of the best attraction Sabah has to offer, and is what makes Sabah famous for, for good reason. Aside from the crystal clear waters, they have a rich marine life that includes colorful fishes and corals.

The most sought after beach for diving is Sipadan Island. This island has won many awards, thanks to the 3,000 species of fish that swim in the area.

What if I’m at Kota Kinabalu?

If you’re in Kota Kinabalu though, a much nearer beach is Tanjung Aru where diving is a common activity. The sunset is breathtaking in this island, so once here, you better take a look at it.

You can also go Sabah island hopping. Start from Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, where you can find a boat to take you to the different islands. Take note that not every island is great for diving and snorkeling, so you better ask around which is best for the activities that interest you. Once you get tired, you can find an island with a resort, like Manukan Island Resort Sabah. If not, you can look for other Sabah island resorts nearby that fits your budget more.

Any other choices?

While you cannot dive here, Maliau Basin is the most famous Sabah “lost world”. Here, you will find a great number of plans and animals, so it’s perfect for nature and adventure lovers. Trekking is needed to explore this land, but it will have wonderful rewards. The waterfalls are stunning, and the rainforest raw.

What about the cultural side?

There are many other Sabah attractions that cater to tourists. For example, there is a Sabah cultural village open to everyone. Two popular options are available: Monsopiad cultural village and Mari-Mari cultural village. Monsopiad is smaller, but Mari-Mari requires you to join a tour so you have to book in advance.

For the average Sabah tourist, climbing Mount Kinabalu is usually high on the main priority list. But if you’re up for more adventure to spice up your climb, why not sign up for Mountain Torq’s Alpine Sports Climbing course?

A newly launched adventure travel product, the Alpine Sports Climbing course will not only help you realize your dream to become a pro climber, but you will also get to do three activities at a time: trek through the Timpohon Trail, experience the Via Ferrata route and rock-climb on Mount Kinabalu’s solid granite walls.

Interested?

Timpohon Trail trek

Day 1 started with a 6-kilometer trek from the Timpohon Gate at Kinabalu Park to Pendant Hut (3,270m) circa 9.30am. For those who have yet to climb Mount Kinabalu, the length of time taken to trek through the Timpohon Trail varies—three to four hours if you’ve been going to the gym; seven to eight hours if you’ve been vegetating with abandon.

Normally, your mountain guide will prepare a small packed lunch for you before you set off on your journey. But just in case you’re worried about lacking fuel, it’s always best to keep an energy bar or two handy in your backpack. You can also munch on dried fruits or bananas throughout the climb, and do make sure to keep hydrated at all times (but not too hydrated as the next toilet is situated 1 kilometer away from the last one).

At approximately 1.30pm, I finally reached Pendant Hut and checked in. I was given a basic yet cozy dorm (which I would share with three other people) with a bunk bed and sleeping bag as my resting place for the next two nights.

After dinner, myself along with other novice climbers gathered at the main hall for a pre-climbing briefing by our guides, Jinu and Pody. During the briefing, we were introduced to the main safety equipments used, both on the Via Ferrata route and for alpine rock climbing. Safety equipments include the safety helmet, climbing harness, lanyard and carabiner. Another important aspect of rock climbing is rope management.

Among the crucial rope management skills are how to check for broken or unsafe rope, how to make a proper loop and the correct way of tying the rope to the harness and knotting it using the figure-8 knot.

After briefing, it was ‘lights out’ time.

Walking on the Via Ferrata

The Alpine Sports Climbing course started 6.30am. Right after breakfast, we slipped into our harnesses, grabbed our backpacks and set off for a climb.

The first half of the climb involves going on the Via Ferrata route which was exciting and mind-boggling. The first thing you have to make sure before going on the Via Ferrata route is to wear a comfortable pair of shoes that are light and flexible—I wore the New Balance 750v1,which was pretty helpful. It also helps to have a pair of light, water-resistant gloves handy as the Via Ferrata cables can get numbingly cold making gripping quite difficult.

While you’re on the Via Ferrata route, don’t forget to take the time to look back on the horizon beyond Mount Kinabalu. With tufts of white clouds, steel blue sky and miniature-looking houses from afar, the view is quite a spectacular one. In fact, if given a choice, I would’ve chosen to sit back and stare at the fascinating vista the whole day. At an average of 11 – 12 degree Celsius, be sure to also layer up on the thermal clothing.

Defy gravity. Climb!

When we reached the climbing site, Pody and Jinu demonstrated how a proper climb is done. Apart from well-fitting climbing shoes, a bagful of courage and another bagful of climbing chalk, the most crucial thing during a climb is the communication between the climber and the belayer (the one who leverages his climb). A climber must constantly communicate to his belayer when he is ready to climb, tired and wants to rest, needs a little pull on the rope, ready to come down, etc.

It is also essential for a climber to be nice to the belayer at all times now that his life is in the latter’s hands.

My first three climbs sailed through rather brilliantly (although there were occasionally brief moments of terror with a foot slipped, etc.). The most challenging route on the course would probably be The Forgotten, which at 30 meters long, was the longest route with the least nooks and crannies to sink my grips into. I must say, rock climbing isn’t at all brawn-dependant. In fact, figuring out your next step (literally) on that rock can be a mentally challenging effort. It’s almost like chess, only dangling on a rope.

Nonetheless, when I reached the top and yelled, “safe!” to my belayer, the feelings of fear and frustration were already replaced by pride. I’ve conquered a difficult route!

Article originated: SabahGuide.com - Sabah travels made easy! We provide free advice for Sabah tourism

When you want to go on an adventure in a tropical setting, you cannot go wrong with a country like Malaysia. It is a place where the people take all efforts to take care of their natural resources and some of the most interesting tropical forests and bodies of water can be found.

As far as the wonders of the country can go, it seems that the Kinabatangan River is an ecosystem that is beyond compare. Located on the eastern side of the country, in the region of Sabah, the Kinabatangan River is a place where a lot of indigenous species of wildlife and plants can be found. It is also an example of Malaysians unwavering efforts to show the world its natural wonders while preserving the most out this wonderful body of water and its surroundings.

The Pristine River of Kinabatangan

Kinabatangan River is the second longest river in Malaysia, spanning over 500 kilometres in length, with a great number of wildlife and plant life that can only be found within the area. Some of the most popular animals that can be seen when one takes a tour in the river are the different species of monkeys that live near the riverbank. Red Leaf Monkeys, Proboscis Monkeys and Orang Utans are abundant in the Kinabatangan River.

Likewise, you can also see Pygmy Elephants, a number of snakes, birds and other animals that can only be seen within the river or at the very least, within the Southeast Asian region. Because of its natural beauty and its grand river, the area is popular among tourists and backpack travellers alike.

What to Do in Kinabatangan River

Because of the wide protected forest area near the Kinabatangan River and the length of the river itself, there are a lot of things that you can do here. You can start with a tour from a boat where you can view a number of animals and plant life that live within the riverbanks. You can also take a trek around the area to have a firsthand feel of the ecosystem where these animals live.

Aside from the river cruise in Kinabatangan River, the other areas near the river offer a great amount of sightseeing with the Malaysian hospitality in mind. You can go to Gomantong Hill and be amazed with the view ahead, or enter the Gomantong Caves, where a lot of rock formations can be seen. Therefore, you can book a short trip or a long trip and still be satisfied with the beauty and the wonders of nature that the river and its surrounding areas can offer.

How to Get to Malaysia’s Top Tropical Paradise

There are two ways to get to Kinabatangan River. The first way is by taking a plane from Kota Kinabalu, an urban Malaysian destination to Sandakan. If you are coming from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s capital, you can take a budget airline flight to Sandakan and arrange for your commute from Sandakan to Sukau, a district located on the base of the river. This will take roughly half the time as you would on land travel, which can go for as long as 6 hours.

Likewise, you can take a bus trip from the city to Sandakan, and arrange for your commute to Sukau. Whether you choose to go on a plane or to travel by land is a matter of preference, comfort, money and just how much time you’d be willing to spend on travelling.

Hotel and Lodging Arrangements for Kinabatangan Travelers

Until recently, hotels that are at the base of the river offer excellent lodging offers to travelers and tourists that can make ones trip to the Kinabatangan River enjoyable and comfortable. You can book a hotel in Sukau, such as Sukau Rainforest Lodge, a major travelers point located at the base of the river. From there, you can plan for your tours and whatever tropical forest trip you would prefer.

To reduce the troubles caused by delays in your trip, it is preferred that you book in advance. Ideally, pick a date in between the summertime and the rainy season, to still capture the beauty of Kinabatangan, while avoiding the summer rush of travelers and the high hotel prices in the area. From your hotel, you can also book your tours according to the number of days when you would be staying in area. This will then be charged as a whole package, which will then be secured upon checkout.

Kinabatangan may be the last tropical paradise that would come to mind in the Southeast Asian region, but it surely is a place that can offer more than just sights and sounds. It is a place that is a feast for the senses, and can be enjoyed by those who would like adventure just as much as those who would like to bask in the calmness and serenity if the nature surrounding them.

You can also try Sabah island hopping. Make sure that Sabah diving or snorkelling is part of your plan so you can see the wonderful marine life. You could stay at a Sabah island resort to freshen up. A recommended place would be Manukan Island Resort Sabah, a common stopover place for the island hoppers.

There are much more you can see and do, but these are what the usual places tourists go to. Of course, creating your itinerary based on your preferences is advised, because not everyone enjoys the same things.

Article originated: SabahGuide.com - Sabah travels made easy! We provide free advice for Sabah tourism

One of the best diving destination

Judged to be among the top 5 diving locations in the world, Sipadan, called a divers Mecca, sits in the heart of the Indo-Pacific basin. It lies five degrees north of the equator in the Celebes Sea (Sulawesi Sea) just off the east coast of Malaysian Borneo, close to the borders of Indonesia and the Philippines.

Richest marine habitats in the world

Sipadan said to be the center of one of the richest marine habitats in the world. Rising 600 meters (2,000 ft) from the seabed, it is Malaysia’s only oceanic island, formed by living corals growing on top of a volcanic cone. More than 3,000 species of fish and hundreds of coral species have been classified in this ecosystem which has been growing for hundreds of years.

Swim with hawksbill turtle and barracuda

It is blessed to be surrounded by rich and teeming reef life consisting of both hard and soft corals and all of manner reef fishes. Frequently seen in the waters around Sipadan are green and hawksbill turtles, enormous schools of barracuda normally in tornado-like formations as well as large schools of big-eye trevally, and bumphead parrot fishes. Pelagic species such as manta rays, eagle rays, scalloped hammerhead sharks and whale sharks also visit this must-see (and experienced) dive site.

Diversities of marine and wildlife

It is not only the big fishes that continue to amaze divers coming (or returning) to Sipadan, the macro life is equally mesmerizing. Divers are guaranteed to see garden eels, leaf scorpion fishes, mantis shrimps, fire gobies, and a variety of pipe fishes at various dive sites. The diversity and abundance of marine found at Sipadangives it its reputation of being one of the best dive locations in the world.

Above water, the thickly forested island is home to tropical birds such as kingfishers, sea-eagles, sunbirds, starlings and wood pigeons. There are also fruit bats and monitor lizards and at nightfall a turtle may come and lay her eggs on the beach while crabs scurry into the water at the slightest sound or motion.

Also a bird sanctuary

Declared a bird sanctuary as early as 1933 and 2004, all accommodation facilities on Sipadan were timely closed in 2004 to further protect this pristine natural treasure.

Accessing & getting to Sipadan

While Sipadan location seems to be remote, it is readily accessible via different modes of transport. You can fly to Tawau from either Kuala Lumpur (3 hours) or Kota Kinabalu (50 mins); via Sabah, the normal point of entry is Kota Kinabalu or again via Tawau.

If you are arriving at Kota Kinabalu airport, you are probably flying in from Singapore, Taipei, Hong Kong or any other country of origin apart from Malaysia. For those flying from Kuala Lumpur, then you will have a choice of either to fly direct to Tawau or to fly via Kota Kinabalu and catch a connecting flight.

Neighbouring Islands

But before you depart for Sipadan, its best for you to identify to do a little homework on which resort you wish to stay. There is also a choice to go to Mabul or Kapalai neighbouring islands. Get your bearings right: Sipadan Island, Mabul Island and Kapalai Island are very near each other and these 3 islands are off Semporna town, East Coast of Sabah, Malaysia. Borneo.

The route from Tawau to Semporna

Resort operators will make arrangements to meet you at the Tawau airport and then whisk you off to Semporna by private van, which takes about 1 hour or so. The roads connecting Tawau and Semporna are good. Not much can be said for the scenery though just miles and miles, as far as the eye can see of palm oil plantations, an important crop feeding Malaysia’s exports.

Going Semporna via public transport

For those not wanting to take the private van or arriving at Tawau from another part of Sabah, it’s possible to take a public van like a bemo, from Tawau to Semporna. This ‘station’ is situated close to the marketplace. But be prepared to wait. No worries, this provides you to mingle with the locals and maybe sample some street food.

If you do not wish to fly on return to Tawau from Semporna, there are buses leaving for the larger towns in Sabah from the outstation bus terminal, e.g. to Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan.

Finally if you choose a more leisurely pace, you can spend a night either in Tawau or Semporna. Tawau is the bigger town compared to Semporna. But both offer unique experiences and excellent fresh seafood.

Article originated: SabahGuide.com - Sabah travels made easy! We provide free advice for Sabah tourism

They say that the best things in life are free. Well, not exactly, but they need not be budget-breaking either. Here are some tips on how to save up on your Sabah holiday, while maximizing the fun.

1. Island Hopping at Tunku Abdul Rahman Park and Diving at Sipadan Island

Sabah has some of the most awesome scuba diving sites in the world—especially on the islands of Mabul and Sipadan—however scuba diving is still a relatively expensive activity.

For affordable scuba diving packages and accommodation in Mabul and Sipadan, head over to Uncle Chang’s Sipadan Mabul Dive Lodge where you can go diving at a cheaper rate and have a cozy place to stay during your trip.

A caveat: a rock n roller’s spirit is very much required.

Uncle Chang’s Sipadan Mabul Dive Lodge
+6 017 895 0002 (mobile)
+6 089 781 002 (office hours)
+6 089 786 988 (24 hours)
fax to +6 089 784 002 or email world@ucsipadan.com / unclechang99@hotmail.com.

2. Experience The Culture Up Close via Homestay

For a dash of culturalization experience in Sabah, nothing beats the good ol’ homestay experience which allows you to participate in locals’ daily activities, taste their cuisines, learn their languages, explore their hometowns and absorb their cultures and traditions.

Best of all, you’ll get to enjoy the benefits of having a place to stay and derive an educational experience of a lifetime while at it.

For more info on homestay places, contact:

Sabah Tourism Board at +6088-212121 / Sri Pelancongan Sabah at +6088-232121 or email info@sabahtourism.com. Alternatively, visit this link http://www.sabahtourism.com/sabah-malaysian-borneo/en/homestay/.

3. Shopping The Local Goods

When shopping in Sabah, the things to look out for are pearls, fresh and dried seafood, as well as local handicrafts.

To get all these at the best possible bargains, be sure to check out the tamu markets, which are held in every district on different days of the week; the KK Handicraft Market and the Gaya Street Sunday Market.

If you’re heading to the East coast of Sabah, don’t miss the Tawau Handicrafts Market, otherwise known as Pasar Gantung—where you can find plenty of decorative items and woven mats and baskets in various colours. Remember to haggle before you buy!

4. Delicious Food for Under RM10

Skip fancy restaurants and go where the locals eat before payday! Check out the night market food stalls at Medan Selera Kampung Air for a delicious variety of grilled fish and seafood.

For coffee shop fares, visit the older shop lot areas around KK, such as along Gaya Street, Sinsuran and Segama where you can still get a filling plate of economy rice for RM4.

Visiting the East coast? Savour the delectable grilled fish at the Sim Sim Market in Sandakan or have a hearty char siew (barbecued pork) lunch at the Sin On Market in Tawau.

5. Conquering Mount Kinabalu? Try This Alternative

Planning and organizing an expedition to conquer Mount Kinabalu can be a challenging task—both time and moneywise.

For a better option, sign up for climbing expeditions held by groups such as the Coalition Duchenne expedition, which is held annually to raise global awareness for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. By signing up, you won’t only be experiencing the adventure of a lifetime, but also do it for a mighty cause.

For more info, email Cath Jayasuriya at Catherine@coalitionduchenne.org. Visit the website at www.coalitionduchenne.org.

6. Cheap Tour Guiding (Just Ask The Locals!)

When it comes to getting things cheap in a foreign place, knowing the local lingo would help by a huge margin—better still, having local friends in Sabah who knows the place like the back of their hands.

Besides getting things at bargain prices, having a local friend will also save you a lot on tour guide packages. Best of all, he or she would know the best places to avoid the tourist traps in order to stretch your ringgit.

And being a Sabahan, they may be kind enough to let you crash on their sofa too.

7. Worry About Your Waistline? Exercise!

With all the delicious food Sabah has to offer, naturally, you would want to be worried about your waistline. Fear not, for great exercise and an excellent way to explore the place, skip public transportations or car rental. Instead, grab a wide-rimmed hat and a tube of sun block as we’re going for a walk!

For athletes, annual competitions and tournaments are great seasons to come visit—plus, it will provide you with the excuse for a guilt-free food indulgence.

Check out sporting events such as the Borneo International Marathon and Sabah Adventure Challenge.

For info, visit the Borneo International Marathon website at www.borneomarathon.com / the Sabah Adventure Challenge website at www.sabahadventurechallenge.com.

Sabah is full of unexpected surprises

Sabah is definitely a place worth visiting. Whether you are the type of person who loves nature, beaches, adventures, or even culture, these are all Sabah attractions tourists love.

Fancy activities on beach?

Sabah diving and snorkelling is especially fun because you also get to see the marine life. Sipadan Island is the best place to do exactly this. However, if you want to tour more, then go Sabah island hopping by going to Tunku Abdul Rahman Park and finding a boat. If you get too tired from the activities, then simply stay at Manukan Island Resort Sabah or any other Sabah island resort you see. There are several islands to choose from, each one giving a different adventure.

Maliau Basin: The Lost World in Sabah

A similar experience would be visiting Maliau Basin, Sabah’s most popular rainforest. Also called Lost World, there’s plenty of reason behind it, particularly the diverse wildlife and plants living there. It’s really a beauty to behold, with the huge waterfalls pounding into the Sabah basin.

Experience the culture first hand

Going to a Sabah cultural village is something you should include in your itinerary. Either Mari-Mari cultural village or Monsopiad cultural village will greatly add to your educational but fun experience. Several ethnic groups are living here, and you can see part of their daily routine when you join a tour.

Wildlife at Kinabatangan River

The Kinabatangan River is the longest river in Sabah, and a cruise here allows you to see wildlife without getting yourself dirty. This river is world-famous, so it’s a must-see when visiting Sabah. The Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre is another place where you can see wildlife, but there are only orang utans here. One other option is Turtle Islands Park, which as the name says, has turtles.

Your turn to share experience

More surprises await tourists. They just have to come and see it for themselves. In Sabah, there’s never a boring day with all the activities and tourist spots.
